Apple recently updated its website with information on cleaning products such as the iPhone, iPad or Macs, making it clear that it can be cleaned with disinfectants without being damaged. Apple has adapted the long-available website with the cleaning instructions for its products, at least in the English-language version for the USA, to the current situation around the global spread of the coronavirus. A number of instructions for cleaning the devices with disinfectants or appropriate wipes have been added.
70 percent isopropyl alcohol and disinfectant wipes are OK
It can now be read there that Apple products can be cleaned with the help of disinfectant wipes and wipes with 70 percent isopropyl alcohol. The manufacturer limits this to the "solid and non-porous surfaces of Apple products", ie the display, the keyboard, and other external surfaces. So there is no risk of damage from disinfectants on the manufacturer's smartphones, tablets, and PCs.
There are of course some other restrictions. Apple explicitly warns against trying to use bleach to clean its products. In addition, it should be avoided that moisture gets inside the respective devices. Users should also refrain from immersing the products completely in disinfectants or other cleaning fluids in order to free them from viruses or bacteria.
Apple also warned against using the disinfectants on surfaces made of fabric or leather. Other electronics manufacturers should offer similar advice when it comes to cleaning their products in times of the spread of a highly contagious, potentially fatal disease. The German-language Apple website has not yet been updated with the new recommendations for cleaning Apple products.
Especially in connection with plastic screen protectors and housing covers and covers, alcohol and other substances in the disinfection and cleaning wipes can cause damage to the respective surface of these accessory products. According to Apple, the devices themselves should not be negatively influenced if you follow the recommendations of the US manufacturer.
