Apple iPhone 12 120Hz Display Is Lacking Drivers ICs

The next Apple smartphone is likely to come a little later than usual, because according to all information so far, the iPhone 12 will not be unveiled in September, but in October. We already know what it looks like, there are still many question marks about the specifications.

There have already been various leaks about the design of the iPhone 12, and it has been more or less certain for weeks what the Apple device will look like. However, there are still many unanswered questions about the technical details. One concerns the display: It has been speculated for a long time that the iPhone 12 could come with a 120Hz display.

60Hz limit in the software

There were already first indications of this, namely an option in an iOS 14 beta to limit the refresh rate to 60 Hz. Such a "barrier" for the frames was of interest because the iPhone 11 only has a 60 Hz panel anyway has, so a software-side limitation can actually only indicate a higher frequency in the successor model, according to the Apple experts.

Since then, there has been a lot of speculation as to whether or which the iPhone 12 could bring a 120 Hz panel. There were also reports that the two better models could have such a display. In addition, it was and is assumed that the iPhone 12's screen will theoretically be capable of 120 Hz, but Apple will not activate this feature out of the box to save battery power.

Panels yes, but no driver ICs

Now there is new information about it, but this does not make the matter easy or more transparent. Because according to Ross Young on Twitter, founder and head of Display Supply Chain Consultants (DSCC), Apple did manage to secure enough 120 Hz panels for the iPhone 12, but not enough suitable 120Hz driver ICs, that gets integrated circuits, PhoneArena also reported.

"So you need to find a fix, which will be difficult, wait for 120Hz driver ICs and potentially delay start-up significantly or start at 60Hz. We hear they will start at 60Hz."
