iFixit published its teardown of the iPhone Duo on 26 October 2026. To explain the hinge failures, iFixit built a 3D model of the hinge from teardown footage, patents and CT scans.
The model shows that damage clusters near the transition from the flex-cable gap to the central hinge support. In the closing simulation, the center support bar fails to drop far enough, so the screen’s curved fold comes down on it. This creates a small stress hotspot near the reported break location.
The curved rails that guide the waterdrop folding motion can rise above the surrounding components and interfere with the display layers. Fine dust can also enter the hinge mechanism despite the IP68 rating. The internal mechanism is dust-resistant, but the hinge mechanism apparently is not. Dust can cause a hinge “crunch” and a “green line” damage pattern.
On the positive side, the outer screen and batteries are removable, and smaller components are fairly accessible. iFixit gave a provisional repairability score of 5 out of 10, the highest for a foldable so far, pending parts availability.
Repair costs are steep. An inner display replacement costs $999 without coverage, while a replaceable polymer cover costs $49 ($19 with AppleCare+). JerryRigEverything’s bend test also showed screen corruption in the same way. Apple is investigating the cracked screens and replacing broken units.
